Brief Description of Positive Handling in Schools
The "Positive Handling in Schools" course is designed to provide education and training for school staff on techniques for managing challenging behavior in a positive and safe manner. Participants learn about strategies for preventing and de-escalating challenging situations, emphasizing a positive and supportive approach.
Module 1: The Course Structure
Module one of the online training course, Understanding, Positive Handling for School Staff, covers the dangers of hostile student behavior, the aggressiveness curve, the scarf model, deescalation steps, government pamphlets on violent behavior.
Module 2: A Serious Business
Module two discusses problematic school behaviors and their consequences, emphasizing the importance of professional handling. Real-world examples include a seven-year-old boy who was acquitted after being charged with assault, and a head of care .
Module 3: The Aggression Curve
Module 3 of the aggressiveness curve examines the mechanics of aggressive behavior, focusing on the baseline behavior at the bottom of the curve. The Kaplan Wheeler diagram, created in 1983, consists of five sectors with varying duration, speed, and severity.
Module 4: The SCARF Model
The Scarf model, developed by Dr. David Rock, is a tool used to control aggression in children and teens. It suggests that status (scarf) is relative importance, as it gives people a sense of control over events and safety.
Module 5: Government Advice and Guidance
This module discusses government guidelines for controlling aggressive and violent behavior. The booklet provides advice rather than legislation, focusing on the use of reasonable force guidance for head teachers, staff, and governing bodies.
Module 6: Making decisions: Duty of Care
Module six discusses decision-making, duty of care, and reasonable force in the workplace. It emphasizes that all parties, including teachers, parents, and others, are responsible for duty of care.
Module 7 discusses the UK legal hierarchy, including the European Convention on Human Rights, the UK Human Rights Act, Health and Safety at Work Act, Common Law, and Statute Law.
Module 8: Physical Intervention and Restraint
This program focuses on the importance of physical intervention and restraint in situations involving students who are threatening themselves or others. It emphasizes the need for careful evaluation and control of violent, hostile, or agitated students.
Module 9: Screening, Searching and Confiscation
